What are Kyle Rayner’s powers as a White Lantern?

On October 27th, 2014, /u/blackmanandrobin asked the following on /r/DCcomics:

So I picked Green lantern: New guardians for Godhead and I was wondering. What exactly is the power set for a White lantern? It looked like Kyle was warping reality or some shit.

Well, the White Lantern stuff is a bit complicated by the fact it was all initially going down during the Blackest Night and Brightest Day arcs, which were all pre-N52. For that period, from Wikipedia:

Sinestro as a White Lantern

Each White Lantern possesses a power ring that lets the user create white energy constructs powered by life itself. The original wielder of the Entity, Sinestro, displays the ability to eradicate swarms of Black Lanterns effortlessly and is described as “godlike”. He also appears to survive a seemingly fatal wound from which he recovers within minutes. When Hal Jordan wields the power, he demonstrates the ability to create additional rings and restore heroes claimed by Nekron to life.

When Deadman possesses a white ring, he demonstrates the ability to resurrect a dead bird. He is also able to transform the area of land devastated by Prometheus into a lush forest. However, this seems to be the work of the Entity, as Deadman had been unable to access the ring’s powers himself.

Similar to black rings, white rings initially have no charge. As the wearer embraces life again the ring rises in power level. What happens when a white ring reaches one hundred percent charge remains unknown. The only thing known is that the ring as it charged itself gave Deadman the sensation that someone would die. As the ring reached 100%, it forced Deadman to meet the Hawks where the ring tasked them a second labor, however when Carter and Shiera refused to obey, both lovers were apparently reduced to white dust in the process.

Also, there’s this breakdown of the ring from the DC Wikia entry:

The White Lantern Rings first appeared at the end of the Blackest Night saga, as the rings destroyed the Black Lantern Rings controlling the still living heroes, as well as resurrecting certain heroes and villains that were previously dead. White Lantern Rings work just like any other rings, having the same powers. However, Sinestro and Hal Jordan are the only ones shown using the rings’ powers to form constructs. Since White is a neutral color in the Electromagnetic Spectrum, it can be assumed that White can overwrite the powers of all other Power Rings if it chooses to. After Sinestro had the Entity removed from him and Hal Jordan took his place as host of the Entity, the White Light overwrote his Green Lantern Ring, along with the rings of any other corps (including Black Lantern Corpsmen). The white rings act as a conduit for the power of the white light of creation. As such they can project and manipulate the white light.

That said, all that stuff tied with the stuff around ‘The Entity’, The Labors of the Twelve and all the elemental stuff that was going on back then during Brightest Day. Certainly, seeing as Swamp Thing no longer appears to be the replacement Entity and all the other elemental stuff is being ignored it seems safe to say things played out a bit different in the history of the New 52.

Ahhh, Blackest Night. You were so crazy.

Kyle is basically Colour Jesus

Firstly, Kyle Rayner’s current most used powers are that he is able to channel all the different powers of the different Corps – so he can spew red, napalm-esque blood like the Reds, teleport like the Indigo Tribe, heal like the Blue Lanterns and obviously create constructs like Green and Sinestro Corps.

Now, for the White Lantern specific powers, that’s still an ongoing thing for Kyle that’s being explored in Green Lantern: New Guardians. Certainly there are white constructs, but you’re right on the money that like the Life Entity he seems capable of bringing things back to life, warping reality and basically doing anything he damn well pleases. This has mostly been explored since he returned from behind the Source Wall, the only person known to have done so, and as revealed in the Godhead arc is also now in possession of the Life Equation due to this, so that might also be affecting his powers and abilities.

Certainly during the flashforward Green Lantern: New Guardians – Futures End #1 we saw a Kyle that was brainwashing and controlling the whole universe and was basically omnipotent.

According to the DC wiki though, here is the current powerset of a White Lantern ring:

  • Connection to Life: The white ring uses the energy of life and so is connected to all life. The ring can allow users to see the foot prints of life and see the past and present conditions of all life in a limited area around the user and even the “souls” or essence of those who have recently died.
  • Energy Blasts: They can fire energy blasts.
  • Force Field Generation: The white power ring can create various forcefields of various sizes and shapes to protect the user and others around him/her. These force fields protect him/her from the hazards of the void including filtration of stellar radiation and microscopic particulate matter which would ordinarily be fatal should the space debris strike the ring wielder at high speeds. An atmosphere appropriate to the person’s biology is created inside the force-field, body temperature is maintained and waste products are removed. Gravitational stresses which could cause injury are stabilized. Theoretically, a white lantern could use the ring as his/her/its sole source of life support.
  • Energy Constructs: The white ring can form constructs of white energy. The primary function of the Power Ring is to provide a weapon capable of transforming the wearer’s thoughts into physical constructs through the wearer’s mastery of life and the entire emotional spectrum.A white lantern can create any particular items or construct that they can imagine as long as they have the mastery of emotions necessary to will it into existence. The constructs are made out of white energy, which is a tangible form of pure life, and they exist only as long as a white lantern is fueling it with their mastery of life energy. Items created by the rings are not indestructible and are only as powerful as the force of emotions of the white lantern that created them.
  • Phasing: a white power ring allows the wielder to pass through certain solid objects, such as walls. Which objects that are not penetrable are not known, but it may depend upon the strength of the user and the density of the object’s molecular structure.

Deadman was still, ironically, the best White Lantern

Environmental Playback: Upon their will, the white lantern can recreate a holographic environment based on data in its memory banks.

  • Invisibility & Light Refraction: A white lantern can render him/her/itself invisible by willing themselves to bend light waves around his/her/its form.
  • Energy Absorption: The white ring can absorb and store most other energies including the energy of the other colors in the emotional spectrum.
  • Flight: By the manipulation of anti-gravitons and directed molecular movement, they can fly at incredible speeds. In atmosphere, a white lanternl has been known to fly as fast as Mach 10 in atmosphere by creating an aerodynamic envelope around his body. Towing others, usually within a bubble, his/her speed is limited to the twice the speed of sound or 1440 mph. In space,a white lantern speed can be significantly greater and has been known to approach 80% of lightspeed in normal space. Flight is possible at velocities exceeding light speed. In atmospheres, air friction is not a hindrance, since heat is either absorbed or reflected by the ring’s field.
  • Wormholes & Spacial Warps: Their power grants its wearer access to wormholes in space, enabling the them to rapidly cut time and distance needed for transport.
  • Healing: The white rings have the ability to heal almost any injury, initial complete cellular regeneration, and in some instances resurrect the dead.
  • Connection to Life: The white ring uses the energy of life and so is connected to all life. The ring can allow users to see the foot prints of life and see the past and present conditions of all life in a limited area around the user and even the “souls” or essence of those who have recently died.

That said, given the seemingly unlimited power and the multiple ways they could explain him doing anything, don’t be surprised if Kyle’s list of abilities just continues to grow and change.

Hope that helps! For not being able to answer your question definitively, here’s a bonus image as Batman as a White Lantern in all its ridiculous glory – he even made little bats! :D

I remember the headaches back during the 90s when I was heavily collecting then-current DC titles as well as lots of back stock (including quite a bit of pre-Crisis stuff). I like continuity. I like the characters having history. I like being able to put together a cohesive timeline of stuff that happened to a character-or at least knowing there is some semblance of a timeline. One of the big problems that I felt DC had was not rebooting their entire universe. Instead, they opted to keep elements from the past. As is apparent in your Hawkman entry, that created problems. There were problems for Superman and the Legion as well. Even the JLA had issues, since it was said many of their pre-Crisis adventures took place, but with an altered lineup. Oddly enough, that made DC’s history complex, IMO. And that’s ironic given that the Crisis was supposed to streamline things.

Now, after Flashpoint, they have the same problems. They’ve tried to keep some stuff, but toss other stuff. And it’s come back to bite them in the ass. All the continuity glitches involving the Teen Titans immediately after the new 52 began, the question of “did Superman die or not”, how can you condense all of Batman’s history, including several iterations of Robin, into 5 years, and more. One of the chief problems here is how the heck Final Crisis and Blackest Night happened. And they *had* to happen in some form. Also important is how the Sinestro Corps War went down, given the involvement of the Cyborg Superman, Superbrat (<—not a typo; he really was a brat) Prime, and of course, the Anti-Monitor. I can't read minds, so I don't know what was going on in the minds of editorial, but darnit, some of the *same* problems occurred after Flashpoint as they did in the post-Crisis era. But this time, they should have known better.

There's other stuff I'm curious about too-
What's Kyle Rayner's history since he was never a member of the JLA in the current DCU?
Was Hal ever Parallax? Did he ever destroy the Corps? If so to both, what caused that? Was Coast City ever destroyed in the new 52? If it was destroyed, it had to have happened differently, bc neither Mongul nor the Cyborg Superman would have been involved.

Geez, I hope the next time (and I'm sure it will happen again) DC reboots their universe, it needs to be from the ground up, keeping none of the prior history.
