What’s the deal with the Fourth World?

On December 30th, 2014, /u/rustbucket2010 asked the following on /r/DCcomics:

What’s the “Fourth World”? I was reading Kingdom Come and it’s mentioned.

What the deal with the Fourth World?

The Fourth World is a term used both within the DC Universe to refer to a place/period of time and in ours to refer to a collection of titles written by Jack Kirby. That may sound simple but there’s a huge amount to it! As I enjoy ranting about comic book history, let’s get right down to it.

What’s with speedsters, like the Flash, creating energy constructs like Green Lantern does?

On December 8th, 2014, /u/Hippieslayer555 asked the following on /r/DCcomics:

So, I read up on Flash on the DC Comics wiki, and it is stated that Speedsters have an ability called Energy Construct Creation that allows them to create objects like Green Lantern can, not exactly the same but the principle is still the same.

I’ve got to ask, I’ve read all of the New 52 series and Rebirth and I’ve never seen this ability demonstrated, do speedsters actually have this ability and how often do they use it?

Before I saw it, /u/harryboom offered this:

it was in rebirth, when barry and the rest all created new costumes out of speed force energy. it hasn’t shown up in N52

Then came my answer:

“Could Green Lantern create Kryptonite?”

On December 8th, 2014, /u/IrateGinger asked the following on /r/DCcomics:

Could Green Lantern create Kryptonite?

Just thought I’d expand on what /u/gamer4maker has already (most excellently) here:

Short answer yes with an if, long answer no with a but.

Basically pre-Rebirth, if a Green Lantern had enough willpower they could create any energy source known to man, including Kryptonite radiation. Since Geoff Johns took over the Lanternverse things may have changed a little. It’s never been explicitly stated, but it’s never happened, and it appears the rules have been changed.

Anyway, on with my answer!

Whats is up with all the different Batgirls and who is Oracle?

On December 6th, 2014, a user who wished to remain anonymous PM’d me on Reddit to ask the following question:

Whats Batgirls name? I know in the new52 shes Barbarra but did she used to be called stephanie (cassandra?) before the reboot? Also who is oracle

Fanart by JamieFayX on Deviantart.

Well, firstly, congratulations on making me feel super old, but here’s the answer to your question: :P

Much like how there have been a number of Robins throughout DC history – as they either move on (like Dick) or die (like Jason), multiple ladies have gone by the Batgirl name over the years. Below I’ll try and give you, in chronological order, a short overview of each. You can also click on the their name to their full wiki page if you want to know more.

What is the origin of Flash Facts?

On December 5th, 2015, /u/Hugostigglitz asked the following on /r/DCcomics:

Have been wondering when these were brought about and by who? Was it Gardner Fox with Jay Garrick? Broome and Infantino with Barry in the Silver Age? If it was in the Silver Age was it just to promote education in comics or was it to distance the comic from other comics that were being blamed for causing juvenile delinquency? Both? (Therefore was it a push by Julius Schwartz?).

So, normally I like to have a lot more reference material to work with when answering these types of questions, but the internet has let me down! It seems that nobody has really cared much about the history of ‘Flash Facts’ before – certainly not enough to fight the copious blogs and news stories that use it for headlines and make the search much harder.

Still, I’ll try, so here we go:

DC and Marvel both have a Captain Marvel, what’s the story there? What big differences are there between Superman and Shazam?

On December 3rd, 2014, /u/GypsyMonster asked the following on /r/DCcomics:

I’m very new to the actual comic books themselves, but have a decent grasp so far…but on to my question.

If I do a Google/Google Image search for “Captain Marvel,” I’ll get about a 50/50 split between Shazam (DC) and Captain Marvel (Marvel). Is there a particular reason for both big two publishers to have the name?

Also, what big differences are there between Superman and Shazam? (I know practically nothing about Shazam other than he looks just like Supes).

OK, here we go… “SHAZAM!”

Can the New 52 version of Flash run faster than light?

On December 2nd, 2014, /u/magnifishiv asked the following on /r/DCcomics:

New 52 Flash can run FTL right?

Well, I’m not actually sure it’s ever been stated exactly – but from this (absolutely amazing) ‘respect thread’ for the Flash of the New 52 we can see a collection of examples of his speed. The Tokyo evacuation certainly sounds like it would have to be pretty up there, not to mention the stuff above femtoseconds…

What is The Joker’s real identity?

On December 1st, 2014, someone – who has since deleted their Reddit account – asked the following on /r/DCcomics:

What is The Joker’s real identity?  (I bet DC can’t even answer this one.)

GalleryChar_1900x900_Joker_52ab8edcabce71.28062812

“Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another… If I’m going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!”

~ Joker, Batman: The Killing Joke, 1988.

While that certainly holds true – and his identity has never been concretely revealed – there’s a bunch of stuff we can talk about with this though! Firstly, there’s some staples that appear in most versions: Continue reading
